Note metodologiche
Una collezione di fotografie antiche (come altre collezioni) nasce dalla passione per i materiali che si raccolgono, che ognuno di noi raccoglie per soddisfare la propria curiosità e perché apprezza le cose per quello che sono, sia per le qualità estetiche o storiche o per altri mille motivazioni. Spesso dalla passione di collezionare nasce anche un impegno di ricerca e di studio per dare il giusto significato e soddisfare forse quel sottinteso senso di ordine che ci spinge a categorizzare le nostre cose, come fecero nel passato coloro che costrinsero tutti gli elementi a rientrare nelle specie e nelle sottospecie, ordini e categorie.
Per farla breve negli anni ho sviluppato alcuni strumenti per descrivere le mie fotografie, per attribuire loro un autore, per capire come avessero lavorato i fotografi e ricostruire la loro storia. Alcuni degli strumenti nati in questo modo sono in questa pagine, a disposizione di tutti, per uno spirito di condivisione assoluta del sapere. Naturalmente tutto quello che ho scoperto o che ho elaborato sulla base dei dati raccolti non ha un valore assoluto, ho sicuramente sbagliato molto e non prendete tutto quel che ho scritto come una verità!
Nel documento 1 potete leggere alcune schede di catalogazione del materiale della collezione (i primi 500 record), composto principalmente di stampe all'albumina ma che comprende anche foto di studio, stereoscopiche, carte postale e altro.
Nel documento 2 trovate una bibliografia piuttosto estesa sugli argomenti principali.
Nel documento 3 trovate una lista di moltissimi fotografi che hanno lavorato nei territori dell'Impero Ottomano, Vicino Oriente e Nord Africa. Ho voluto comprendere in questa lista non solo i fotografi residenti nei luoghi, ma anche tutti quelli che hanno fotografato a vario titolo in quei territori. Sono quindi compresi grandi studi a livello internazionale, editori di cartoline illustrate, esploratori e viaggiatori più o meno noti, archeologi, militari. Il mio scopo era dare una visibilità a chiunque abbia contribuito a creare e preservare l'immagine del mondo medio orientale come era tra '800 e '900.

Il documento 5 (non ancora caricato) è forse l'elaborato più complesso e presuntuoso che abbia prodotto. Fin da quando ho cominciato a collezionare fotografie antiche mi sono trovato, come tutti, a dover capire per molte di esse chi fosse l'autore, dove fosse scattata, in che anno e il contesto storico. Ho cominciato così a fare ricerche sui fotografi conosciuti, su quelli semi sconosciuti e su quelli ignoti. Non si può negare che la prima fase di questa ricerca, ovvero la raccolta di migliaia di immagini digitali, sarebbe stata impossibile senza le potenzialità della rete. Vedere migliaia di immagini di un fotografo, invece che accontentarsi di quelle possedute o quelle conservate in un museo , consente di capire quali furono le campagne fotografiche, la scelta dei soggetti, i committenti, i riferimenti geografici, gli studi, le biografie. Da quella prima fase sono derivati elenchi del lavoro dei principali fotografi, elenchi (alcuni di questi potete trovarli nelle pagine dedicate agli autori) attraverso i quali ho ricostruito le serie principali (luoghi, personaggi, attualità) e uno studio tipologico delle firme e delle didascalie che abitualmente venivano apposte sui negativi in vetro. Il passo successivo è stato quello di riversare in una (immensa) tabella i nomi dei fotografi o degli studi, i dati biografici, gli indirizzi, i periodi di attività, le firme, le didascalie tipiche, il tipo di lavoro svolto, lo status professionale e una serie di esempi del lavoro e dei cartigli presenti sul verso delle foto di studio, fondamentale per l'attribuzione, la datazione e la ricostruzione della carriera di ognuno.
E' evidente che questo lavoro, durato anni, non può definirsi completo (non potrà mai esserlo) e sarà affetto da decine o centinaia di errori o imprecisioni piccoli o grandi. Ma questo non mi preoccupa, se qualcuno prenderà in mano questo documento potrà correggerlo e implementarlo all'infinito! Poiché il documento è di difficile gestione sto cercando di inserirlo in una forma accettabile, per adesso potete vedere nell'esempio di cosa stiamo parlando.

Methodological notes
A collection of ancient photographs (like other collections) was born from the passion for the materials that are collected, which each of us collects to satisfy his curiosity and because he appreciates things for what they are, both for aesthetic or historical qualities or for others a thousand reasons. Often the passion for collecting also creates a commitment to research and study to give the right meaning and perhaps satisfy that underlying sense of order that pushes us to categorize our things, as those who forced all the elements to re-enter the species did in the past and in subspecies, orders and categories.
In short, over the years I have developed some tools to describe my photographs, to attribute them to an author, to understand how photographers had worked and to reconstruct their history. Some of the tools born in this way are on this page, available to everyone, for a spirit of absolute sharing of knowledge. Of course, everything I discovered or elaborated on the basis of the collected data has no absolute value, I certainly made a lot of mistakes and don't take everything I wrote as a truth!
In document 1 you can read all the cataloging cards of the material of the collection, composed mainly of albumin prints but which also includes studio photos, stereoscopic, postal cards and more.
In document 2 you will find a rather extensive bibliography on the main topics.
In document 3 you find a list of many photographers who worked in the territories of the Ottoman Empire, near east and north Africa. I wanted to include in this list not only the photographers residing in the places, but also all those who photographed in various capacities in those territories. This includes large international studies, publishers of illustrated postcards, explorers and more or less well-known travelers, archaeologists, soldiers. My aim was to give visibility to anyone who contributed to creating and preserving the image of the Middle Eastern world as it was between the 19th and 20th centuries.
Document 4 How the database is built
Document 5 (not yet uploaded) is perhaps the most complex and presumptuous document I have produced. Ever since I started collecting old photographs, I have found myself, like everyone else, having to understand for many of them who the author was, where it was taken, in what year and the historical context. So I started to do research on known photographers, on semi-unknown and unknown ones. It cannot be denied that the first phase of this research, or the collection of thousands of digital images, would have been impossible without the potential of the network. Seeing thousands of images of a photographer, instead of being satisfied with those owned or kept in a museum, allows you to understand which were the photographic campaigns, the choice of subjects, the clients, the geographical references, the studies, the biographies. From that first phase were derived lists of the work of the main photographers, lists (some of these you can find in the pages dedicated to the authors) through which I reconstructed the main series (places, characters, current events) and a typological study of the signatures and captions which were usually placed on glass negatives. The next step was to put the names of the photographers or the studios, the biographical data, the addresses, the periods of activity, the signatures, the typical captions, the type of work done, the professional status into an (immense) table. and a series of examples of the work and scrolls on the back of the studio photos, fundamental for the attribution, dating and reconstruction of everyone's career.
It is clear that this work, which lasted for years, cannot be defined complete (it can never be) and will be affected by dozens or hundreds of errors or small or large inaccuracies. But this does not worry me, if someone takes hold of this document they can correct it and implement it indefinitely! Since the document is difficult to manage I am trying to put it in an acceptable form, for now you can see in the example what we are talking about.
